Description
Black Jazz Records was founded by pianist Gene Russell in 1971 in Oakland, CA. Created to showcase the talents of young African American jazz musicians, the label released twenty albums over the four years it remained active. The label explored such musical genres as funk, free jazz, and soul jazz, while invoking a more political and spiritual tone in its music. Notable artists: Doug Carn, Walter Bishop Jr, Calvin Keys and more.
