Debut Records was formed in 1952 by Charles Mingus and his wife, Celia, and joined soon after by Max Roach, Debut Records was formed with a focus on artist control, a revolutionary concept at the time, making it one of the first truly independent record labels. Debut only released a few dozen albums before closing in 1957. Despite the small number of records in its catalog, musicians like Hank Mobley and Kenny Dorham made their debut albums on Debut Records. Other notable artists: Mingus, Bud Powell, Miles Davis, Paul Bley, Oscar Pettiford, Thad Jones, and more.
