Description
New Jazz Prestige was formed by 20-year-old jazz afficionado and entrepreneur Bob Weinstock in 1949. In 1958, Weinstock formed the New Jazz label separate from Prestige, creating the iconic “purple label” (used from 1958 – 1963). The purple label series started with Mal Waldon’s Mal/3, recorded at the Van Gelder Home Studio in Hackensack. Between 1958 and 1963, the label released in approximately a hundred recordings. Notable artists: Mal Waldron, Eric Dolphy, Jackie McLean, Roy Haynes, and more.
