Description

Storyville Records was founded in 1954 by Karl Emil Knudsen in Copenhagen, Denmark. (Not to be confused with the American record label of the same name.) Storyville has a rich history deeply rooted in jazz and blues music. The label takes its name from Storyville, the infamous red-light district in New Orleans, and reportedly the birthplace of jazz. Storyville’s early releases were 78 rpm reissues of such legendary artists as Ma Rainey, Clarence Williams Blue Five, and James P. Johnson. However, inspired by the number of jazz musicians touring Europe (Knudsen also owned a jazz club of the same name), the label soon transitioned to recording and releasing these artists’ music. Knudsen died in 2003 and in 2005, Storyville was acquired by Edition Wilhelm Hansen (a division of the Wise Music Group). Some other artists associated with Storyville include Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, Big Bill Broonzy, Lonnie Johnson, and more.
