Description

Arguably the most beloved and iconic of all American jazz labels, the Blue Note record label was founded by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis in 1939. Its name is derived from the slightly off-pitch blue note that is a distinctive trademark of blues and jazz music. Known for its large stable of prolific and well-respected jazz musicians, Blue Note played a crucial role in facilitating the development of hard bop, post-bop, and avant-garde jazz. With its distinctive cover art (much of it produced by Reid Miles) and its highly recognizable logo (the logo showcased here was introduced in 1973 and discontinued in 1984), Blue Note continues—over eight decades later—to be a trailblazer in the jazz music industry today. Notable artists: Sidney Bichet, Mile Davis, Jimmy Smith, Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan, and many more.
