Chess Records was founded in 1950 by Polish Immigrant brothers Leonard and Paul Chess. The location of Chess records in Chicago was famously enshrined in rock ‘n’ roll history by the Rolling Stones, who named their song “2021 South Michigan Avenue” after it (now designated as a historic landmark). Chess became known for its many blues and R&B recordings by legendary artists. Today, the catalog of the iconic record label is owned by Universal Music Group. Notable artists: Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Chuck Berry, Etta James, Willie Dixon, Buddy Guy, and many more.
