Description

Founded in 1951 by Lillian McMurry, Trumpet Records aimed to record musicians from the Mississippi Delta who did not have access to recording studios. In its four years existence, Trumpet recorded some of the era’s best blues music, such as Elmore James, who recorded his original hit “Dust My Broom” on Trumpet Records. In a tribute to McMurry, Sonny Boy Williamson wrote and recorded two songs about Lillian McMurry: “Pontiac Blues” (about McMurry’s car) and “309” (after her address). Although Trumpet was relatively short-lived, it had an outsized impact on the blues scene of the day and beyond. Notable artists: Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson, Big Joe Williams, Luther Huff, Arthur Crudup (aka Elmer James), and more.
