Description

Short for (Creed Taylor Incorporated), CTI was founded by Jazz producer Creed Taylor in 1967. Originally formed as subsidiary of A&M records, Creed relaunched CTI as an independent label in 1970. Despite filing for bankruptcy in 1978, the label forged a new distribution deal with Columbia records, a deal that was short-lived and ended with CTI losing the rights to its master tape library. So in 1984, the label went independent again, only to be embroiled in a longstanding lawsuit with Warner Brothers. In the ensuing years the label was restructured and though various circumstances ended up selling the post-A&M catalog to Sony, which was distributed by Masterworks Jazz in the USA. Notable artists: Wes Montgomery, Herbie Mann, George Benson, Paul Desmond, Quincy Jones, and more.
