Description

ESP-Disk was founded by Bernard Stollman, a lawyer, in New York City in 1963. Stollman’s aim was to document the city’s free jazz movement. The label’s name comes from the Esperanto album it released when it opened for business on the 12th floor of 156 Fifth Avenue. ESP-Disk released around 125 albums between 1963 and 1974, including free jazz, free-form rock ‘n’ roll, experimental music, poetry, and freak-folk. The label’s goal was to give artists complete artistic freedom, without commercial expectations or interference. ESP-Disk’s releases were innovative and diverse, and influenced future directions in jazz and broke rock taboos. Notable artists: Albert Ayler, Pharoah Sanders, Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, and more.
