John Coltrane. The label released music by progressive jazz musicians such as Leon Thomas, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Gato Barbieri, as well as political speeches and audio journalism. The label’s attention to detail, glossy gatefold sleeves, and high-quality studio recordings set it apart despite its independent status. After five years of operating independently, Thiele partnered with RCA. Although the political spirit of the early years faded, the label continued to make an impact with jazz. As Thiele’s son, Bob Thiele Jr., recalls, Flying Dutchman Records was established to be in step with the times, providing a platform for music that reflected the changing cultural landscape and the desire for change among young people. Notable artists: Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Gil Scott Heron, Lonnie Liston Smith, T-Bone Walker, Otis Spann, and more.
