Freedom Records was a British jazz label founded in 1971 by Alan Bates as a division of Black Lion Records. The musical focus of the label free jazz artists and recordings. Bates had a keen interest in presenting a diverse range of jazz styles, from early traditional to free jazz. In 1975, the company was acquired by Arista Records, and the imprint became known as Arista/Freedom. Notable artists include Albert Ayler, Marion Brown, Charles Tolliver, Gato Barbieri, Cecil Taylor, and Archie Shepp. The label’s catalog includes influential albums like “Silent Tongues” by Cecil Taylor and “There’s a Trumpet in My Soul” by Archie Shepp.
