Description

King Records was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1943 by Syd Nathan. The label remained active until 1975. During its time, the label had a major Impact on the music scene. Starting out as a country music label (called “hillbilly music” at the time), Nathan expanded to the catalog to include R&B, soul, funk, and blues. In fact, Federal Records, a division of King, was responsible for launching the career of legendary artist James Brown. King Records is remembered for its racially integrated workplace—reportedly, the first of its kind in Cincinnati—as well as its in-house production process, in which, recording, mastering, printing, pressing, and shipping were all done under one roof. Today, King Records are sought after by many rare-record collectors. Notable artists: Champion Jack Dupree, Joe Tex, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Albert King, and more.
