Description

Vee Jay Records was founded in Gary, Indiana in 1953 by husband-and-wife team Vivian Carter and James C. Bracken. The label’s name is the first initial of both founders. Vee Jay found early success as an influential R&B label, releasing a record by Gladys Knight and the Pips. It also became a major blues label and later a soul label. Despite its success, Vee Jay faced legal and financial difficulties and eventually ceased operations in 1963. It was revived in 1982 but closed again not long after in 1986.
