Description

Roulette Records, an American record company and label, was founded in 1957 by George Goldner, Joe Kolsky, Morris Levy, and Phil Kahl. Levy, in particular, was known for his iron-fisted management style, directed the label. Interestingly, Roulette Records was reported to have had ties to New York City mobsters. Roulette enjoyed significant success with pop music. It also had a large jazz roster, which was comprised of many of the musicians who frequented and played at Levy’s famed jazz club, Birdland, in NYC. The jazz roster was further expanded when Levy acquired Roost Records. Following an onslaught of legal problems, Levy sold the label to EMI/Rhino records in 1989. The Roulette/Roost jazz catalog is now managed by Blue Note Records. Notable artists: Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Bud Powell, Sonny Stitt, Art Blakey, and more.
