Description
Soul Note Records, the sister label to Black Saint Records, was founded in Italy in 1979 by Giacomo Pellicciotti. His love of music was the impetus for founding the label, and it is said that Pellicciotti gave his artists a great deal of autonomy in all aspects of musical production. Soul Note, like Black Saint, specialized in avant-garde jazz stemming from the free jazz tradition, however, Soul Note tended somewhat more toward the less experimental—that is, mainstream—than Black Saint. Soul note boasts upwards of 350 albums in its catalog, and it was voted “Best Record Label” for six years in a row by DownBeat Magazine until it was beat out by Blue Note in 1990. Notable artists: Mal Waldron, Andrew Hill, Don Cherry, Cecil Taylor, Paul Bley, and more.
