Description

Based in Cambridge, MA, Transition Records was founded in 1955 by renowned record producer Tom Wilson. Transition was short-lived, releasing only 15 albums. Despite releasing some important jazz recordings, among record collectors, Transition is probably better known for its list of unreleased recordings. This tantalizing list includes live recordings by such jazz greats as Donald Byrd, Sun Ra, Yusef Lateef, and Pepper Adams. Some of the unreleased recordings were sold to and released by other record companies, like Here comes Louis Smith (sold to Blue Note) and Sun Ra’s Sound of Joy (sold to Delmark). Transition closed its doors after only 2 years, closing up shop in 1957. Notable artists: Sun Ra, Donald Byrd, Cecil Taylor, and more.
