Vanguard Records was founded in 1950 by brothers Maynard and Seymour Solomon in New York City. Vanguard began as a classical music label, later expanding to Jazz under the direction of John Hammond. In 1965, Vanguard brought on Samuel Charters, whose interest in blues music resulted in the recording of the influential three-record series “Chicago/The Blues/Today.” The recordings featured artists like Junior Wells, Muddy Waters and Otis Rush. Vanguard is known for its large and diverse catalog. Notable artists: Junior Wells, Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, Mississippi John Hurt, Johnny Shines, Big Walter Horton, and more.
