Description

Volt Records was founded in 1961 by siblings Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton (founders of Stax Records) as a subsidiary to Stax. Notably, it was the home label of Otis Redding, and of the first nine albums released by Volt, seven of them were Redding’s. Volt releases were initially issued by Atlantic through their Atco Records subsidiary. Volt, along with Stax, was forced into bankruptcy in 1975, with the master recordings being sold to Fantasy Records and later Concord Records. Notable artists: Otis Redding, the Staple Sisters, the Dramatics, the Bar Kays, the Emotions, Lou Johnson, and more.
